Busy time for Diss Otters!

Diss Otters have had squads of swimmers take part in three competitions in the last fortnight. A team of sixteen juniors and one masters swimmer took to the UEA Sportspark pool for the Norwich Swan Open meet on the 21st and 22nd of April.

With the team swimming in a total of 91 races they finished top six in 48 of those with 22 podium positions consisting of 4 golds, 7 silvers and 11 bronzes. The team also hit many new personal bests which the coaching team are always pleased to see.

 
A special mention to Jacob Shadbolt and Nathan Hunt who were both swimming in their first open gala. The Diss medal winners were Ciaran Strike (2G, 2S,4B), Rosie Munnings (1G,1S,4B), Lily-Anne Jones (1S), Matthew Munnings (1S,1B), Ottilie Miller (2B), Sophia Pickering (1G) and Oslo Chapman (2S).

Sixteen Otters (pictured) travelled to Dereham last Saturday for the Norfolk Junior League B final for the Christine Clarke Cup and finished a very creditable second to host team Dereham Otters. Diss laid second throughout the evening without quite being able to catch the leaders.

On the night Diss won 13 out of a total of 45 races which were individual and relay events with a team consisting a mix of experienced and novice swimmers, so a very satisfactory result.

Also on Saturday seven swimmers took part in the Beccles Development gala.
These galas are a great stepping stone towards more competitive competitions and the Diss swimmers came home with medals and personal bests aplenty.

The Otters competing at Beccles were Freya Button, Lily Ellis, Eleanor Godbold, Darcie Martin, Ella Townsend, Toby Townsend and Molly Wilson.

The prestigious Eastern Regional Championships take place over the two May Bank Holiday weekends with Matthew Munnings having qualified for the senior (14-16yrs) weekend in Norwich and Daniel Bachu for the junior (11-13yrs)weekend in Luton.

 

CoN Easter Meet

Matthew T, Matthew M and Rosie

Well done to our intrepid trio of Matthew T, Matthew M and Rosie who have been competing at the CoN Easter Meet this weekend.

Rosie hit new PBs in all of her four races and topped it off with a silver in the 100 breaststroke, Matthew T swimming in the 17 and overs finished 3rd in the final of the 100 back with a new PB, whilst Matthew M hit a new PB in the 50 free of 27.54 (converts to 26.80 shortcourse) to qualify for Regionals.

Otters Success at Ipswich Open

A squad of fifteen swimmers from Diss Otters travelled down the A140 to a snowy Ipswich to take part in the March Open held at Crown Pools last weekend.

In a high quality gala with clubs competing from Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex - Diss came away with an incredible 65 new personal best times from only 87 individual swims, a conversion rate of 75%. 51 of those swims resulted in a top six finish, and of those 51, 22 were podium positions (6 gold, 9 silver and 7 bronze.)

Otters Beat The Big Freeze

Otters at UEA Meet

Fifteen swimmers from Diss Otters beat the big freeze to take part in the City of Norwich March Long Course gala at the UEA Sportspark.  In a packed weekend of top class action the Diss squad took part in a total of seventy two races coming away with twenty five top six finishes, of which twelve were medals.  Oslo Chapman, Finlay Neve, Ciaran Strike, Sophia Pickering and Thea Irvine were the medal winners and all of the squad can be proud of their achievements, with some great new personal best times being set over the two day meet.

The Diss Otters swimmers who competed were Daniel Bachu, Callum Blair, Harry Button, Olivia Chapman, Oslo Chapman, Lily Ellis, Shannon Evans, Imogen Grimes, Forbes Irvine, Thea Irvine, Finlay Neve, Emma Neve, Sophia Pickering, Ciaran Strike and Matthew Tatum. 

Diss Otters fly at Warwick Thompson Gala

A squad of 17 swimmers from Diss Otters took part in the Warwick Thompson Memorial County gala held at Waterworld in Thetford over the weekend.

This gala is staged by Norfolk ASA and is attended by clubs from across the County.

From a total of only 69 individual swims the Otters scooped a staggering 34 medals – a near 50% return!

The 34 medals consisted of 12 golds, 10 silvers and 12 bronzes.

Many swimmers also hit new personal best times throughout the weekend.

The Diss Otters squad were Lily Ellis, Amber Dewsbery, Alex Jackson, Shannon Evans, Harvey Gates, Katie Halmshaw, Ciaran Strike, Oslo Chapman, Toby Townsend, Harry Button, Olivia Chapman, Nathan Hunt, Forbes Irvine, Darcie Martin, Kara O’Dell, Finlay Neve and Thea Irvine.

Diss Otters at the Norfolk County Championships 2018

Diss Otters had a successful time at this year’s County Championships held at UEA Sportspark over the last two weekends.

The twelve years old category for boys saw Barney Clarke scoop County golds in the 100 breaststroke, 50 breaststroke, 50 freestyle and 50 backstroke.

Rosie Munnings won the Otters other gold in the twelve years old girls 100 butterfly.

Over the fortnight Diss won five gold, six silver and five bronze medals in the Individual races and another three bronzes in the County Relay Gala which took place on the second Sunday afternoon.

Back in the individual races Otters finished in the top eight in fifty two races out of a total of one hundred and fifty eight swims and also achieved many new personal best times.

Cameron Day and Matthew Munnings also both received their county colours for representing Norfolk four times from ASA East Region president Stuart Murray.

 

A big thank you to all the clubs officials, coaches and volunteers for making the gala a successful one for Diss.

Diss Otters Sprint Open Gala – Event Report

Diss Otters held their biggest event of the year when the Diss Otters Sprint Open Gala took place at the UEA Sportspark last Sunday.

Nearly 250 swimmers from clubs in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire turned up in force, and produced some great action in the pool for the large crowd to cheer on and enjoy.

The Otters sent a squad of over 50 competitors taking part in 329 individual swims over distances between 50m and 400m.

Although the quality of the opposition was extremely tough Diss still came away with 60 medals (16 gold, 17 silver and 27 bronze), with a further 46 swims finishing in the top 6.

As with most galas swimmers are always looking to improve their times and Diss came away with a fantastic 59% of swims resulting in new personal bests.

Medal winners on the day for the Otters were Jude Ashken, Max Ashken, Daniel Bachu, Callum Blair, Max Brookes, Amber Daly, Cameron Day, Lottie Gates, Imogen Grimes, Thea Irvine, Evie Kemp, Matthew Munnings, Rosie Munnings, Sophia Pickering, Rowan Shearer, Matthew Tatum, Phoebe Tovell and Maddie Wood.

Diss Otters Win Medals Galore!

A team of sixteen swimmers from Diss Otters took part in two days of action in the pool at West Suffolk Swimming Clubs Neate Meet last weekend.

They came away with 31 medals (15 gold, 12 silver and 4 bronze) and another 33 top 6 finishes.

From a total of 118 individual swims the Diss team recorded an amazing 73 personal best times.

Third in the overall standings for the top girl trophy at the Neate Meet

Highlights included multiple golds for Callum Blair, Thea Irvine, Matthew Munnings and Rosie Munnings. Rosie (pictured) also finished a very creditable third in the overall standings for the top girl trophy.

The club now look forward to Sunday 15th October which sees the annual Diss Otters Open being held at the UEA Sportspark.

Diss Otters Busy Weekend

Swimmers from Diss Otters were kept busy over the weekend with three nights of competition.

Friday and Sunday night saw nearly 80 swimmers take part in the ongoing Club Championships held at Diss Leisure Centre, with some great swims by competitors of all ages, over a variety of distances. A full report on this event will appear after the clubs presentation night in the new year.

Saturday night saw two squads of swimmers sent to compete in galas at the UEA Sportspark and also St.James swimming pool in Kings Lynn.

The Sportspark gala was a development event hosted by the Great Yarmouth club. Eight Otters took to the pool coming away with a fantastic haul of 7 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze medals from only 34 races of which 20 resulted in new personal best times.

The sixteen swimmers that went to Kings Lynn were taking part in the final of the Fenland Senior League with four other clubs, the event was hosted by the West Norfolk club whose swimmers powered to victory with a massive total of 207 points.

Diss laid second during the early part of the evening but with two races to go had slipped back to fourth. However by virtue of two second place finishes in those final two events the Otters managed to snatch third place by just two points.

Final scores were West Norfolk 207, Wisbech 139, Diss Otters 122, Thetford 120 and March 111.
